Sahara Desert, Merzouga, Morocco

Who has not dreamed of taking a camel ride in the Sahara Desert? This is what we did for three days in Merzouga in southern Morocco, the gate of the gigantic sand dunes. There are no words to describe the feeling we felt when facing this stretch of infinite sand for the first time! Let us tell you in detail how we loved this magical experience in partnership with Sahara Desert Luxury Camp.

Honestly, we did not know what to expect when we were told that we were going to sleep in a bivouac (Moroccan tent) in the middle of the dunes in the desert. To our surprise, the facilities were extremely luxurious. Each bivouac had its own private bathroom; it was like being in a hotel room, but with the door directly facing the desert.

The Sahara is one of the most famous deserts on the planet, covering nearly 8 million square kilometers. Contrary to what one might think, sand covers only 20% of the total area of the Sahara: mountains, plateaus and rocky surfaces are also part of the landscape.

For those who love sport and thrills, the Africa hostel offers several very original sports activities to enjoy the dunes of the Sahara differently!

If the camel bivouac or other tourist activities do not bring enough adrenaline, we suggest you to know the dunes of the Sahara desert to the nearest, thanks to the extreme sports in which we guide you:

A descent of the great dune to ski, surfing, bodyboarding, sledding … Of course, the great dune of Merzouga is not equipped with ski lift, so it is on foot or possibly with a camel that you can climb, and then have fun down the slope on almost 160 meters! The Africa Hostel will gracefully lend you equipment usually used for winter sport …

More adventurous? It is also possible to practice paragliding or kitesurfing from the great dune of Merzouga … unforgettable sensations!

Erg Chebbi is also the ideal place for hiking in the Sahara or trekking on foot, mountain bike, or camel, we will be happy to organize.

Trekking around Merzouga

For those who wish, Merzouga and Erg Chebbi is an ideal place for hiking and trekking. A good way to deal with the extreme conditions of the Sahara: temperature, orientation, your senses may be put to the test. Warning ! However, we do not recommend trekking alone, it is safer to be accompanied by an experienced guide.

Sports events in the Sahara

A sporting stay in Erg Chebbi is also an opportunity to practice motor sports. And for this, the Africa hostel organizes motorbike tours, quad, or 4 × 4 to have fun through the dunes of the Sahara! Be aware that many rallies pass in the dunes of Merzouga (Paris-Dakar, Rally Aicha des Gazelles, Raid 4L Trophy, and many others). and throughout the Kingdom of Morocco. We can welcome you from your arrival at the airport wherever it is, and you discover or rediscover the country, its culture, its hospitality, its inhabitants, its landscapes, to leave you eternal memories of the Sahara …

marathon des sablesThe region of Merzouga welcomes in April each year one of the flagship sports competitions in the Sahara: marathon des sables. The route takes all kinds of terrain: Saharan dunes, stony plateaus, tracks, dry wadis, palm groves, small mountains, on 6 stages of 20 to 80 km, including a marathon stage of 42 km and a non-stop stage of about 80 km partly night. It comes first for the intensity of the event, its reputation being the most difficult race in the world.
